A heady maelstrom of smells assaulted Percy’s nose as he stepped into the shop. A raven watched him from the top of a large cage. It quorked in a deep disapproving voice, flapping its coal black wings. Percy gave the bird a wide berth as he walked toward the front counter. What was the point of owning such a huge cage if the bird was just going to sit on top of it and harass customers?
Toads of various sizes and colors stared at Percy with dull shining eyes as he passed, and a collection of orange cats slunk across the tops of the cages, making the rats inside very uncomfortable. As Percy stepped around a particularly wide wall of cages, he caught sight of a strange pink creature sitting on the counter. It looked like one of the cats had tumbled into a vat of hair removal potion. It looked at Percy as he approached. Percy held out a hand uncertainly, but the creature turned its pale eyes away haughtily.
Shrugging, Percy pulled a roll of parchment from his robes and offered it to the man behind the counter. “Hello, sir. My name is Percy Weasley, Junior Assistant to the Minister.” Percy hated the flash of trepidation he saw in the man’s face, but he continued as though he hadn’t noticed. “I’m sorry to trouble you, but because of the recent attacks on Diagon Alley, the Ministry thought it would be prudent to provide every shop owner with a detailed description of the suspects.” Many of the Ministry staff had wanted to simply send the fliers by owl, but Percy thought a more personal touch might comfort the citizens.
As the man scanned the flier, Percy felt another twinge of embarrassment. Their “detailed” descriptions were painfully sparse. A photograph of Rodolphus Lestrange took up most of the page. Underneath that were a few sparse notes. Second Death Eater, young female, German accent. Third Death Eater, female? No identifying features. Penchant for levitation charms Mostly useless, but some information was better than none.
“You can share that with your coworkers and customers,” Percy told the man when he had finished reading (it hadn’t taken long). Reaching into his pockets, Percy produced three similar rolls. “We’d appreciate if you could hang at least one in your window as well. The more eyes that are looking, the harder it will be for these criminals to hide.”
The hairless cat slunk a little closer to Percy and tickled his hand with a whiskered nose. Percy absently stroked the cat between its naked ears.
