The fact that Isaac was even in the library at all would be a clue enough that he was desperate. If that did not tip anyone off the expression of widespread panic on his face would surely do the trick, or perhaps the way he flipped through pages hastily as if looking for some cure that could save his life for whatever it was that ailed him. He wiped the beads of sweat from his forehead and mumbled a few words that probably had meaning before he jumbled them all together in a barely audible tone.
There did not seem to be any way to get around this: he was going to fail Transfiguration. Not only did he lack a topic for the paper that he was trying to work on but he did not even know where to begin looking for something that would be appropriate. Even though the paper was not due until the end of the week for him it may as well have been due the next day. He had no idea what he was doing and the constant badgering of flying books everywhere made him even more uneasy.
He leaned back onto the couch that he was sitting on as he allowed a copy of A Guide to Transfiguration by Irene Baker to rest on his face. As far as he was concerned this seemed utterly hopeless.

Ariana walked into the Library, though it seemed more as if she were floating. Her light silver bangles barely tinkled as she walked, books clutched to ehr chest. She had spent the last few weeks poring over her Transfiguration for the test coming up, and knowing her, she was ready to ace it and get top marks.
However, if you really knew Ariana, you would know that she wouldn't stop there. She would keep studying until the day of the test just to make sure. She pushed her dark red hair over her shoulder and made her way to the couches in the library to take a bit of a break. Reaching her destination, she sat down lightly on a couch, and pulled out a couple of neat scrolls of parchment: these were her study notes, done meticulously well and in the neatest writing.
She settled into the couch, pulling off her shoes and dropping them gently to the floor. As she did so, her honey brown eyes fell upon the boy sitting across from her. It was Isaac Garner, a Slytherin boy and in her class. He was leaning back on the couch across from her, a book resting on his face. She arched a brow but didn't say anything, a small smile on her lips as she turned her eyes to her paper, reading her notes silently as she crossed one leg over the other. She wasn't sure if he was sleeping, or if he was ready for their test, but she'd remain silent so as not to disturb.

It took Izzy a while to realize that he wasn't the only one sitting by the couches. In fact it was not until the book slipped off of his face and he could see Ariana sitting in front of him that he noticed that she was there. He jumped a little in his seat from the shock as he accidentally threw the book at her.
He calmed down easily, leaning back into his chair as he looked at her. He knew her well enough as one of the Ravenclaw girls in his year. A smirk spread across his face as if he were trying to cover up the fact that he had just completely overreacted to seeing someone that he did not think was there a moment before.
"Oh. Hey, Ariana. It's nice to see your pretty face here."

Just as she had gotten through the fourth point on her page she looked up to see a book come flying in her direction. Thinking quickly she lifted both hands and just barely caught it. Brown eyes wide she looked at Isaac and tried valiantly not to smile. He had been startled, poor boy, she thought to herself, pretending she hadn't noticed. Isaac leaned back then and spoke.
"Oh. Hey, Ariana. It's nice to see your pretty face here."
She arched a perfect eyebrow, "Hello Isaac. You're too kind, it's nice to see you too." she said then her mouth tipped into a half smile of sorts, "Though, in a very different setting I might say. Isaac Garner in the library. What has the world come to?" she said teasing slightly. She handed him his book and leaned back in her couch, crossing one leg over the other again. "What's the occasion?" she asked as she drummed her slender fingers on her knee.

Izzy grinned at her as she handed him the book. "Thank you, Miss Beauchelle." He was just glad that he could say her name.
"Hello Isaac. You're too kind, it's nice to see you too."
He twitched slightly when she called him Isaac instead of Izzy but he tried to make too big a deal of it. He wasn't in a mood to correct anyone on what name he preferred to go by, and since Ariana was a she and not a he he didn't feel the extra motivation to. Perhaps if she were Judy he would have corrected her, but that might involve yelling and yelling at Judy was never a good idea.
"Though, in a very different setting I might say. Isaac Garner in the library. What has the world come to?"
He twitched again when she said Isaac, although this time only his hand moved.
"Yeah, this place does seem pretty weird," he said as he resisted the urge to dodge one of the books that came close to his head. He was quite sure he could never get used to enchanted books perpetually moving around in the library. He was about to offer an explanation for the enormity when she continued.
"What's the occasion?"
He placed the book down next to him and leaned on the armrest. It took him a moment before he responded.
"I'm failing transfiguration," he admitted with a very sour expression on his face. "If I don't get a good mark on this paper I won't pass the class."

"Thank you, Miss Beauchelle."
She inclined her head slightly, adjusting the bangles on her wrist carefully, looking down at them before glancing back up at him, "Pleasure's mine." she said airily.
"Yeah, this place does seem pretty weird,"
Ariana laughed lightly at this, "You think so? Am I to understand then that you think I'm weird as well, considering I spend quite a bit of time here?" she asked, as she glanced at her nails, flicking a fleck of dust off it and looking at the enchanted books. To her, they were calming. It was nice and after a while she had gotten used to them. She followed his gaze and smiled, "Don't worry Mr Garner, you'll get used to them soon enough. After a while you don't even notice them." she said indicating the books with a slender hand.
"I'm failing transfiguration," he admitted with a very sour expression on his face. "If I don't get a good mark on this paper I won't pass the class."
Ariana felt a wave of sympathy come over her. "I'm sorry to hear that." she said glancing at his textbook then down at her own notes in her lap. She sighed then spoke finally, "Well, I'm done the paper," she began pushing her hair behind her shoulder. "I made research notes, they're here. I was just using them to study for our test in three weeks." she held up the papers with her neat writing and colour-coded notes. "I'm willing to let you use them... afterall its just the research.." she said with a shrug. She couldn't leave him on his own; it wouldn't be nice for him to fail.

"You think so? Am I to understand then that you think I'm weird as well, considering I spend quite a bit of time here?"
"Nope." He figured that the simpler his response the better. She couldn't get mad if he didn't offer more information to her, right? He didn't see how she made the connection between thinking that the library was weird and thinking that she was weird. After all, he only thought that the library was weird for nearly pelting him with flying books while he was not all that fond of reading in the first place.
"Don't worry Mr Garner, you'll get used to them soon enough. After a while you don't even notice them."
He smiled as he recognized her attempt to try and to calm his fear but he did not plan on spending that much time in the library. Even if he did he doubted that he could get used to whirling books everywhere.
"I'm willing to let you use them... afterall its just the research.."
He glanced up at her when she told him that she finished the paper. The look on his face gradually became brighter as he realized that she was offering to help him.
"You're going to help me?" he exclaimed, barely able to contain his excitement. "That's great!" Maybe he wouldn't fail after all! He certainly wasn't getting anywhere trying to do the research himself.

"Nope."
"Glad to hear it," Ariana replied airily, her honey brown eyes scanning the library. Surprisingly, there weren't many students in the library at the moment which was odd. Technically, she thought to herself, all the seventh years should be swarming it, given the fact that all the professors had set them mountains of work.
"You're going to help me? That's great!"
She nodded with a tight smile. "Yes, but first, do you by any chance have one of your old transfiguration essays? Just so I can see where you lost the marks and we can make sure you don't this time?' she asked.
"While I check that, you can take a look at my notes and see what you can use." she explained, waiting for his response. She couldn't leave a poor soul behind.

"Yes, but first, do you by any chance have one of your old transfiguration essays? Just so I can see where you lost the marks and we can make sure you don't this time?"
Izzy paused for a moment, thinking of where his last essay was. He had just gotten it back the day before, and angrily shoved it into his bag. Thankfully he remembered to bring it with him. He grabbed his bag from the floor then pulled out the crinkled little pages of parchment that were held together with a paperclip.
The paper had a clear D- written across the top in red ink along with the words "too short". His writing was legible for the first page but the second and third were written in a bigger, messier script. It seemed that he legitimately tried for the first page but had given up for the rest of the paper.
"Um... here," he said as he glanced down at his paper and handed it to her with a gloomy expression.
"While I check that, you can take a look at my notes and see what you can use."
A wide grin spread across his face as he seemed to be chanting a pretty girl is helping me with my essay! in his head. He nodded at her as he took the notes and started to look them over. He crossed his legs on the couch and set his bag aside. Isaac flipped through her notes trying as hard as he could to find something interesting in them that he could write a paper on.

"Um... here,"
Ariana reached out a hand and took the essay from him, placing it on her lap and smoothing out the wrinkled pieces of parchment. She bit her bottom lip, seeing the big D and the comment about it being too short. Her blue eyes scanned the page, flipping it and going on to the next two pages. "Now I hope you don't mind me saying, but the paper was supposed to 5 pages if I recall. In any case, your work isn't all that bad, just a bad case of being uninterested" she said as she continued to smootht he papers out and took out her quill and green ink. She skimmed the page, makign corrections here and there. She paused mid-way and looked up at Isaac.
"Mr Garner, if you look on the second page of my notes, there's a whole section on transfigurations gone horribly wrong. Professor McGonagall said we could do that as a topic for the paper. Do you think that would itnerest you?" she asked, all business. When it came to academics, Ariana was a pro at gettign people into it and interested: that's why everyone told ehr she should become a professor. But not her, she wanted to be a healer; she had her reasons.

"Now I hope you don't mind me saying, but the paper was supposed to 5 pages if I recall. In any case, your work isn't all that bad, just a bad case of being uninterested"
"Well... yeah," he replied, not able to muster up a legitimate excuse for not doing the full five pages. He started the paper too late, rushed to finish the little that he did have, and did not check all of his facts. Actually, the only research that he did for that paper was from the class textbook.
Out of all the expressions that he tended to carry a look of seriousness almost never came upon him, but this time it was authentic. He ran a hand through his hair as he nodded, trying to think of what he actually did well on that paper. He thought that his introduction was pretty good, probably the best part of every paper that he had ever written, but knew that writing papers was one of the more difficult aspects of school for him. It was right next to paying attention in class.
"Mr Garner, if you look on the second page of my notes, there's a whole section on transfigurations gone horribly wrong. Professor McGonagall said we could do that as a topic for the paper. Do you think that would itnerest you?"
Izzy paused for a moment as the pondered the idea. Then he figured that it might actually be a good idea to look at the second page of her notes while thinking about the paper topic. He grinned a little bit more as he looked at it.
"Yeah, maybe..." he added as the serious look on his face started to lift a little. He read over her second page of notes while reading everything twice. They didn't look so much like notes to him as little paragraphs but he didn't complain. It was organized enough so that he could follow it easier than he would a textbook.
As he came to an example in her notes a smirk spread across his face. A grandfather clock that was bewitched into a supposed perpetual motion had swings that became increasingly more violent and started to break everything that came near it. The idea was amusing to him at the very least.

"Well... yeah,"
Ariana raised an eyebrow and smiled a sort of half smile, feeling a little sorry for him. "Oh Mr Garner, whatever will we do with you?" she said, only joking of course. When the serious look came over his face Ariana leaned back, going back to correcting things on the old essay. "Your introduction is phenomenal Mr Garner. Look, even the professor said so. And your second paragraph is quite well done, but after the first page you seemed to have.. umm... changed tracks or something." she said biting her bottom lip.
She crossed one leg over the other and slowly moved her left food from side to side, tapping the parchment with her index finger lightly. "Honestly Mr Garner, if you would just keep up the momentum you have in the introduction throughout the paper, you'll do amazingly well." she encouraged.
"Yeah, maybe..."
Ariana nodded encouragingly, leaning back slightly in the chair and letting her honey brown eyes travel around the library as she waited for him to look at the second page. When his face seemed to light up, she leaned forward so she could see the sheet a little better, "Did you find something you like then Mr Garner?" she inquired, casting a dark look at a first year Slytherin girl who was making eyes at Isaac. Honestly, the boy had work to get done!

"Your introduction is phenomenal Mr Garner. Look, even the professor said so. And your second paragraph is quite well done, but after the first page you seemed to have.. umm... changed tracks or something."
He scratched the back of his head. "Yeah... that's because I rushed it." Although whether or not he started the paper in time it generally turned out in a similar format to his last one. His papers also had a habit of being a bit short. The day Isaac Garner did more work than needed on a paper was the day he gave all of his professors a heart attack.
"Honestly Mr Garner, if you would just keep up the momentum you have in the introduction throughout the paper, you'll do amazingly well."
Izzy looked up at her with a look of surprise clear across his face. "Really?" No one had ever been that encouraging to him before but more or less tried to convince him that the B+ was worth working hard for over a D or C. The thought that he could possibly be capable of getting an excellent grade on a paper never really crossed his mind. He grinned brightly before looking back down at her notes, suddenly aware of how he hungry he was.
"Did you find something you like then Mr Garner?"
"Wha?" He glanced up at her, almost losing his place when she spoke to him. He smirked before turning to look at her notes again.
"I guess so. This one accident was a bit funny," he said as he paused to stare at it again. "Some guy tried to bewitch a clock and it destroyed his house." Then again, hearing it out loud made it less funny.
Haha. House destroyed by a clock. Nope, it was funny again.

"Yeah... that's because I rushed it."
A sympathetic look passed over Ariana's face, "Aw, hey, I know." she said quietly. "I know, sometimes the topics are boring. Or it starts out being interesting then halfway through it seems like the biggest bore in the history of humankind," she said with a light laugh. "Such is academics. But hey, its not your fault." she said as she flipped her hair over her shoulder.
"Really?"
"Yes, really," Ariana said. "I have no doubt you're capable of it, you just get bored. So, I'll help you stay on task." she offered. "Anyhow, it'll help me with studying for the test." she added as she glanced at her nails momentarily then smoothed out her robes instinctively.
"I guess so. This one accident was a bit funny," he said as he paused to stare at it again. "Some guy tried to bewitch a clock and it destroyed his house."
"Yep, you can use that. You'll just have to talk abotu what went wrong, why it happened, sequence of events and such. Which should be easy." she said as she hopped off the couch and walked (though it seemed like she floated) towards th shelf right above Isaac's head. "I got the information from a book here.." she said as her slender fingers grazed the spines of the books until she found what she was looking for. She plucked the book off the shelf and flipped to the index, skimming the page. Finding what she was looking for she opened the page and handed it to Isaac. "See, diagrams, pictures, information.. the whole nine yards." she said with a smile.
