Charlie, after growing bored of his Transfiguration homework, had decided to take a stroll around the library in hopes of stumbling across something interesting. He didn't expect to have much luck. It was a library after all.
Rounding a wide bookshelf, he was mildly surprised to walk into what felt like a solid wall of air. He took a moment to contemplate the paradoxical nature of that thought, then stepped back to see what he had slammed into.
The answer was apparently, "nothing." Shrugging, Charlie moved to continue on and collided with the nothing again. This time the nothing seemed to shift a little in response.
"Hello?" said Charlie.
The nothing made a sound like an old trumpet and stalked off. The ground under Charlie's feet trembled and he clung to a nearby shelf until the nothing had come to a complete stop once again.
"Well," said Charlie. "That was more interesting than Transfiguration, anyway."

Jenna Doherty was seated at a nearby table, her Herbology homework spread out in front of her. Jen wasn't focusing on her homework, though. She was holding a small mirror with one hand, while the other idly adjusted her hair.
Generally, it was quite a task to distract Jen once she was in front of a mirror, but something, or rather, someone, caught her eye as he rounded a corner and walked head-first into nothing.
...
Jen put her mirror down and tilted her head to the side. Her expression was similar to that of a confused lemur as she watched the boy, who she recognized as a Hufflepuff- Charlie Constantine to be exact (Jen could easily recognize and name most of the older Hufflepuffs; she had trouble placing names to some of the younger ones), shortly interact with the "nothing," causing it to make a noise that nothing does not normally make.
When the ground rumbled a bit and Charlie clung to a bookshelf, Jen stood up and slowly approached Charlie, keeping her arms in front of her as she went, in case she, too, ran into nothing.
"Well," said Charlie. "That was more interesting than Transfiguration, anyway."
From behind him, Jen nodded, "And Herbology." And Jen's hair- it was far more interesting than that as well. "What was that?" she asked.

"I think it was an elephant," Charlie replied sagely. "An invisible one, obviously," he added, just in case Jenna - who he remembered seeing in the common room once or twice - was confused. He also recalled that Martha liked Jenna's hair. She thought it would make good nesting material and was sure to mention it to any passing owls. Charlie had once tried to explain to his friends that Martha spoke fluent owl, but that hadn't ended well. They just didn't understand cats.
At that moment an invisible parade went by, complete with fanfare and cheering crowd.
"And that," said Charlie, "was a parade."

"I think it was an elephant," Charlie replied sagely.
Jenna opened her mouth to ask what on earth an elephant was doing at Hogwarts and, more, importantly, why it was in a library of all places, but Charlie was one step ahead of her.
"An invisible one, obviously."
"Oh," Jen said. "Right, of course." It was a perfectly logical answer as to why an elephant was in the library until Jenna realized that, in fact, it wasn't a logical answer at all.
"What's an invisible elephant doing in the-" Jen was interrupted by a crowd of people cheering. She spun around, looking utterly bewildered. "What the-"
"And that," said Charlie, "was a parade."
Jen shrugged, "I...I guess it was, but what's it doing in here?" She paused, then added, "And who has an invisible parade?"

Charlie gave Jenna a look. "Invisible people," he said. It seemed perfectly obvious to him. "And what is anything ever doing here?"
Sometimes his friends would get irritated with him when he gave them answers like that. They said he sounded smug and didn't make any sense. However, they usually forgave him in a moment or two.
"I think I'll stay here for a while," Charlie said, half to Jenna and half to the empty air above her head. "Maybe some other interesting invisible thing will walk by. I just hope it's not invisible Transfiguration homework." He felt a little silly after saying that because it was a well-known fact that Transfiguration homework - invisible or otherwise - rarely walked anywhere.

"Gee," Jenna said, "I guess they're not kidding when they call it the 'Invisibility Section,' huh?"
"I think I'll stay here for a while. Maybe some other interesting invisible thing will walk by. I just hope it's not invisible Transfiguration homework."
"Do you mind if I stay too?" Sure, Charlie was a little off and it was a known fact among Hufflepuffs that he spoke to his cat, but he seemed perfectly nice to Jen. "I assume you're trying to avoid doing your Transfiguration homework?" she asked. "I don't blame you- I've got a bit of Herbology work that's less than interesting, and I certainly wouldn't mind being distracted from it."

"Sure," said Charlie. Jenna could stay if she wanted to; he didn't own the library.
"I assume you're trying to avoid doing your Transfiguration homework?" she asked. "I don't blame you- I've got a bit of Herbology work that's less than interesting, and I certainly wouldn't mind being distracted from it."
"I'm always trying to avoid my Transfiguration homework," replied Charlie. "Except when I'm trying to avoid my Potions homework." He leaned back against a shelf and listened to the rumble of a nearby invisible train. "I always liked Herbology, though. Martha got along really well with the plants - except for the ones she ate."

"I'm always trying to avoid my Transfiguration homework," replied Charlie. "Except when I'm trying to avoid my Potions homework."
Jenna smiled. "Oh, I know how that is! It doesn't take much to get me away from any of my homework." In particular, mirrors were a favorite distraction, though the Invisibility section was proving to be just as interesting. Jen glanced around nervously as the invisible train went by and inched a bit closer to a book shelf, hoping she wouldn't get mauled by said train.
"I always liked Herbology, though. Martha got along really well with the plants - except for the ones she ate."
Jen nodded and then stopped and quirked an eyebrow. "I...I beg your pardon? Who's Martha?" And more importantly, why was she eating plants? The name sounded familiar to Jen, but she couldn't quite put her finger on exactly who Martha was.

"Who's Martha?" Charlie asked incredulously. "Martha's my cat, of course. She knows who you are. She likes your hair."
He turned away from Jenna to "watch" an invisible horse clop by. "I wonder if this is where they get the horses that pull the horseless carriages." The general consensus was that they moved on their own, but Charlie had always suspected that there was more to it.

"Martha's my cat, of course. She knows who you are. She likes your hair."
"Oh! Yes!" Jenna exclaimed, "I remember. Yes, I see her in the common room often." At the mention of Jen's hair, she beamed and, in a way that she liked to think was very casual, tossed her hair to the side (but made sure to smooth it out afterward, of course). "Well, tell her thank you."
Generally, Jen wouldn't tell someone to thank their cat for liking something of her's, but Jen happened to be rather vain and loved to be complimented on her appearance (her hair in particular), even if it was by a cat.
"I wonder if this is where they get the horses that pull the horseless carriages."
Charlie's question drew Jenna aware from Happy Hair Land, and she asked, "Do you think there are really horses pulling those carriages? I always assumed that they were just magic." Never having witnessed a death, Jen had never seen a threstral and wasn't up to the point in Care of Magical Creatures where they were mentioned just yet.
"I bet they use these invisible horses if there is something pulling the carriages," she said. "What else could possibly do it? And it seems like a waste of time for the teachers to make all of the horses or whatever they are invisible, so I bet they just get them from here." Jenna's eyes widened and she turned to Charlie. "Do you think there's a whole stable of horses in here? Or a zoo? You walked into that invisible elephant before!"
If anyone happened to be passing by at the moment, they'd probably think the two Hufflepuffs to be out of their minds, but Jenna didn't particularly care (unless it was relating to her hair, but she felt confident that it looked nice and presentable today, so that was the least of her concerns).
